Saie Tokugyokunyo-shin (Goddess of Auspicious Virtue)
Held at Eimyo-in, a sub-temple of Myoken-ji, the head temple of the Nichiren sect
This deity, through the power of the Lotus Sutra, bestows good fortune. The image of Saie Tokugyokunyo-shin used in this design was printed from a woodblock carved in November of Kansei 8 (1796).
The woodblock measures approximately 39 cm in height and 19 cm in width—quite large—indicating that in the Edo period, rather sizable paper talismans were in use. Due to its great size and its status as a treasured temple artifact, the talisman is no longer printed and bestowed except on special occasions.
Saie Tokugyokunyo-shin is more commonly known as Toshitokujin, the deity of the New Year. The term Eho (¡Èfortunate direction¡É) refers to the direction in which this deity resides, and it is believed that facing this direction when undertaking an activity will bring good fortune in all matters. For this reason, during the New Year season, people affix a talisman of this deity facing the Eho to pray for blessings and prosperity.
The three wish-fulfilling jewels held by the goddess are also called the Three Mirror Jewels (Sankyō Hōju), representing the three lights—sun, moon, and stars—and the three powers—heaven, earth, and humanity. They signify her role in governing the workings of the world.
